Joseph completed his pupillage specialising in crime for which he was under the supervision of Phillip Clemo.

During pupillage Joseph gained experience in oral and written advocacy and received compliments from Clients, Solicitors, Colleagues and Judges. His work described as being of  ‘…the quality one would expect to see from someone of many more years’ experience.’

Alongside crime, Joseph has an interest in disciplinary and regulatory work.

Joseph’s maturity and prior experience allows him to quickly build a rapport with clients, instructing solicitor and opponents. Joseph has a confident and persuasive oral advocacy style and a practical, down-to-earth approach to his practice.

Prior to coming to the Bar Joseph worked as a critical care nurse for over ten years before teaching medicine for the University of Manchester Medical School.

Joseph represents parties in both the Crown and Magistrates Courts and accepts instructions to prosecute and defend in both the Magistrates and Crown Court. He frequently appear in a wide range of matters. Alongside Magistrates Court trial he has also been instructed on a number of Crown Court trials during his second six of pupillage.

Magistrates Court

As a Grade 1 Prosecutor Joseph has prosecuted a variety of matters including first appearances, contested trials and Newton hearings. Joseph has also gained experience in motoring and driving offences for the Crown, defendants and the Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency.

His Defence work in the Magistrates has included bail applications and a range of motoring offences such as exceptional hardship and drink driving. Joseph has also had success at defending charges of failure to provide samples for analysis.

Crown Court

Joseph prosecutes and defends a range of matters in the Crown Court including sentences and committals for sentence, breaches of bail, community and suspended sentence orders as well as appeals from the Magistrates Court on both conviction and sentence. In a recent appeal he was successful in having an appeal against conviction and sentence overturned. Joseph has also provided advice on appeal from the Crown Court for a client in a multi-hand drugs case.

Joseph has recently been instructed on a jury trial prosecuting a matter relating to the possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

The quality of the work he provides has been recognised by counsel and judges and he has been complemented by judges on his level of preparation and clarity in his advocacy. Joseph has also provided advice on the potential for appeal of a sentence passed where the Defendant had a recognised psychiatric condition.

Joseph has experience in working with vulnerable witnesses and those with neurodiversity issues. He has also recently completed the Inns of Court College of Advocacy (ICCA) course Advocacy for Children in Conflict with the Law and has applied this when prosecuting and defending younger clients.
