R v Overton (aka Fury-Walsh)

February 9, 2023

David Polglase prosecuted a man who was charged with multiple rapes, assaults and coercive and controlling behaviour against three women.

David Overton also went by the name David Fury-Walsh and falsely claimed to be related to boxing champion Tyson Fury. Overton denied all the charges but was found guilty by a jury following a four-week trial at Chester Crown Court.

He was convicted of 13 counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault, three counts of controlling and coercive behaviour, three counts of actual bodily harm, one count of sexual touching and possession of a knife. He received an extended sentence of 33 years, comprising a 27 year custodial term plus six years extended licence.

The case received nationwide news coverage on the BBC, in the Daily Mail and the Daily Star, as well as in the Chester Standard and the Manchester Evening News.
