R v Barnfield

July 13, 2015

Alison Dorrell acted for Alan Barnfield at the Criminal Court of Appeal.

Mr Barnfield had been jailed for four years for outraging public decency after being found not guilty of having sexual intercourse with a Shetland pony.

Miss Dorrell appealed the sentence on the grounds that Barnfield had been cleared of the charge by a jury.

Mr Justice Saunders agreed there was ‘merit’ in the appeal and concluded: “We consider it would be unfair to allow this sentence to stand.”

The judge, sitting with Lord Justice Jackson and Judge Neil Ford QC, cut Barnfield’s sentence to two years.

The case was reported on the Sheffield Star website.
