Aqeel is a specialist commercial barrister and joined Chambers as a tenant in October 2023 following the successful completion of his pupillage under Pépin Aslett.

Since joining Chambers, Aqeel has developed a broad practice across the Business and Property spectrum. Aqeel is instructed on all aspects of litigation, both on paper and in court, as well as advising on suitable methods of dispute resolution such as mediation.

Prior to joining Chambers, Aqeel worked at a firm specialising in complex international dispute resolution. Aqeel also worked as a County Court Advocate and undertook over 500 hearings across a range of commercial, chancery and general civil law matters.

Commercial & chancery litigation

Aqeel’s practice focuses primarily on commercial litigation. He has wide experience across a broad range of commercial disputes, including sale of goods and supply of services cases, debt recovery claims, disputes concerning issues of contractual interpretation, and consumer credit disputes.

Aqeel regularly appears in court and represents clients in a range of contexts, including small claims trials, fast-track trials, interlocutory hearings, and procedural hearings. Aqeel also has a busy paper-based practice and prides himself on his ability to meet tight deadlines.

International

Aqeel has a particular interest in public and private international law.

Aqeel recently assisted David Berkley KC in an UNCITRAL arbitration concerning jurisdiction and the governing law of an international contract.

Aqeel recently advised a company as to the appropriateness of a governing law clause and exclusive jurisdiction clause within a settlement agreement which sought to compromise a claim for the alleged infringement of intellectual property.

Construction & property

Aqeel’s practice also covers a broad range of property work and he is regularly instructed in commercial landlord and tenant disputes, including issues relating to forfeiture, disrepair and arrears.

Aqeel has also dealt with numerous residential property matters including possession proceedings, housing claims and tenancy deposit claims.

Aqeel has begun to develop particular experience in construction law.

Aqeel advised a contractor as to the correct interpretation of a JCT Contract and its payment terms.

Aqeel recently advised a contractor as to the merits of its proposed claim for damages arising out of critical delays to a project.

Data & information law

Aqeel is regularly instructed to provide advice and draft pleadings on data protection and privacy cases.

During pupillage, Aqeel assisted his supervisor, Pépin Aslett, in a claim concerning over 470 police officers whose pension statements were sent to out of date addressed in error.
