Operation Hardwick concludes

Rebecca Penfold, led by Allison Summers KC, represented the first defendant, a boy aged 16 at the time of the killing. The trial was heard before Mr Justice Bright and Rebecca’s client was acquitted of murder and convicted of manslaughter. The second defendant was convicted of murder. The prosecution had sought a conviction on the grounds of joint enterprise, citing in their closing speech “they are all in it together”

At sentencing hearing, they successfully opposed an application by the media to release their child defendant’s name and secured a sentence of 2 years’ 10 months’ detention. The case received coverage on the BBC.
