His Honour Paul Watson KC

December 6, 2024

It is with great sadness that we report the death of His Honour Paul Watson KC.

As Head of Paradise Chambers in Sheffield, he was one of the driving forces behind the merger with St John’s Buildings in 2011, joining the Board of the newly formed Chambers and continuing to work to make the project a success in the best interests of his colleagues.

Paul went on to become a Circuit Judge in Sheffield, and then the Recorder of Hull and East Riding, before being appointed as the Recorder of Middlesbrough in 2020 where he remained until his retirement earlier this year.

He dealt with his illness with typical stoicism and good humour, and continued sitting as a judge in retirement until as recently as a few weeks ago.

Paul was an exceptional barrister and judge and a supporter of the independent Bar. He was popular, sociable, and always had time for everyone. He will be missed tremendously by his very many friends, both in Sheffield and beyond.

Our thoughts and condolences are with his many friends and, in particular, his wife and son.
