HH Trevor Barber
The members and staff at St John’s Buildings are very saddened to learn of the death of HH Trevor Barber. Trevor’s contribution to the early days of Chambers in Sheffield was significant. His foresight and wisdom provided the foundation for what became Paradise Chambers.
Trevor was hugely popular with solicitors, Judges and his colleagues at the Bar. He was loyal to his many friends and a source of sound advice. We all remember with fondness his dry sense of humour!
In 1992, Trevor was appointed to the Circuit Bench, presiding over a mixture of civil, family and criminal matters. He greatly enjoyed his visits to court centres away from South Yorkshire, especially to Hull. In time he became the first designated Family Judge in South Yorkshire. Trevor was modest about his contribution to the work of the Family Court and justice in Sheffield. In fact, it was immense. At a time of an enormous expansion of public and private law, Trevor brought practical solutions to difficult situations. He would say himself, it was only when desperate did he reach for a law report!
After a short illness Trevor passed away on Friday 8th December. Our thoughts are with Judith and his family at this time.
