15-year-old boy sentenced for the murder of Harvey Willgoose

October 22, 2025

A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced today to detention at His Majesty’s Pleasure, with an order that he serve a minimum of 16 years in custody.

Mohammed Umar Khan (who can now be named after Mrs Justice Ellenbogen ruled that reporting restrictions could be lifted) stabbed his fellow pupil, Harvey Willgoose, with a hunting knife during the lunch break at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield.

He was convicted of murder in August, following a six-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court, prosecuted by Richard Thyne KC and Gordon Stables. In convicting him of murder, the jury rejected the boy’s defence that he had suffered from a legal loss of control, which would have reduced his responsibility from murder to manslaughter.

Richard and Gordon were instructed by Jamie Ratcliffe at CPS Yorkshire & Humberside.

The case has received significant media attention including on the BBC, ITV, Sky News, the Telegraph (paywall applies), the Times (paywall applies), the Guardian and the Independent.
