St John’s Buildings is one of the largest sets in the country with sites in four locations across the North, and a high percentage of practitioners recommended in the Legal 500 and other directories. This is an excellent opportunity to join our friendly clerking team based in Manchester City Centre, supporting our Commercial and Employment practitioners.

Working with teams across our sites, you will help to provide a smooth and comprehensive clerking service to our members, including: diary management (ensuring the fair allocation of work), recording of briefs and instructions, checking court & tribunal listings, negotiating fees and dealing with email and telephone bookings and enquiries from clients.

Ideally you will have proven experience of working as a clerk in barristers’ chambers or a similar legal or professional services environment and experience of using a diary management system like MLC or Lex. Knowledge of commercial and employment practice and legal systems would be an advantage, but we welcome applications from those who have clerked other practice areas. A sincere interest in a career as a barristers’ clerk, is a must.

You’ll need to be able to demonstrate strong written and spoken communication skills, high attention to detail, organisational skills, the ability to provide excellent client care and a friendly and helpful manner in working together with colleagues. Essentially, you will have solid working experience of administration, confidence and experience in the use of office ICT and equipment and a flexible and team-oriented approach.

In return we offer a friendly and sociable team environment, a competitive salary and benefits package and, with over 40 clerking roles across our four sites, excellent opportunities for peer support and career development. We have a 5-step career progression framework for our clerks and seek applications from people looking for a long-term career opportunity supporting barristers with their careers and helping to run a busy and professionally managed barristers’ Chambers.

If you would like to join our friendly, professional and knowledgeable staffing team, please write with completed application and equal opportunities forms (available below) by post or email to Feel free to contact Chris Shaw for an informal discussion about the role on 0161 214 1500.

Closing Date: we encourage swift applications and will close when we have sufficient applications shortlisted for interview.
